Where to mail Form 5500-EZ, and whether you should file on paper

The IRS paper address, the private delivery address, the 10-return e-file rule, and our choice between paper and EFAST2.

Summary

Our answer: a paper Form 5500-EZ is mailed to Department of the Treasury, Internal Revenue Service, Ogden, UT 84201-0020; private delivery services use Internal Revenue Submission Processing Center, 1973 Rulon White Blvd., Ogden, UT 84201. Paper is allowed unless you must file at least 10 returns of any type with the IRS in the year, in which case EFAST2 is required. Our pick for a one-time filer: EFAST2 if you already have credentials, otherwise paper by Certified Mail; both are free. Either way, the owner signs and dates the return.

Our verdict: paper or EFAST2

If you already have EFAST2 credentials, file there: you get an acknowledgment and no postal risk. If you would be creating Login.gov and EFAST2 credentials for one return a year, paper by Certified Mail is fine and free. Do not pay a vendor only to transmit a one-page return.

Before you mail

Use the official IRS form for the right plan year, check the EIN and plan number, sign and date, keep a copy, and mail by July 31 for a calendar-year plan (October 15 with a Form 5558 filed by July 31). Do not attach Form 5558 to the return; check the box on line B instead.

Amended returns follow the original route

An amended return for a plan that filed on paper is filed on paper; a plan that filed electronically amends electronically, per the 2025 instructions.

Common questions

Can Form 5500-EZ be paper filed in 2026?

Yes, unless you were required to file at least 10 returns of any type with the IRS during the calendar year that includes the first day of the plan year (2025 for a 2025 plan year, even if you file in 2026); then you must use EFAST2, and a paper return is treated as not filed. The 2025 instructions say the form may be filed on paper using the official IRS form or the downloadable version.

Can I search for my filed Form 5500-EZ online?

No. The IRS says one-participant plan information, whether filed on paper or through EFAST2, is not published on the internet, even though it is public on request. Keep your own copy and your mailing or EFAST2 confirmation.

Can Form 5500-EZ be signed electronically?

Through EFAST2, yes: you sign with your EFAST2 signer credentials. On paper, the plan administrator or owner signs and dates the printed return before mailing.

Does TurboTax prepare Form 5500-EZ?

We found no Intuit documentation for it (checked October 27, 2026). It is a separate return from your Form 1040, filed with the IRS or through EFAST2, not with your income tax return.
